Ryzen 9 5950x Motherboard Buying Guide

Before I wrap up this article, I want to quickly go over some of the things you need to keep in mind when looking for a Ryzen 9 5950X motherboard.

I think it is really important to know what features are important when you are looking for a motherboard. Knowing why you need a specific feature is way better than blindly following some online advice.

With that said, let’s take a look at some of the things you need to keep in mind when looking for a Ryzen 9 5950X motherboard.

1. The CPU Socket

This is the number one thing you need to keep in mind when looking for a Ryzen 9 5950X motherboard. You need to make sure that the motherboard has the right CPU socket for your processor.

The CPU socket is the part of the motherboard where you insert the CPU. Each CPU has a specific socket type that is compatible with it. For example, the Ryzen 9 5950X uses the AM4 socket (like all AMD Ryzen processors).

It is important to choose a compatible motherboard because if you don’t, your CPU won’t work.

2. The Chipset

The chipset is the heart of the motherboard. It is the chip that controls all the parts of the motherboard. It doesn’t affect the capability directly, but it affects the performance and features that the motherboard can offer.

For the Ryzen 9 5950X, you want to look for a motherboard that has either the B550 chipset or the X570 chipset. The B550 is the budget option, while the X570 is the high-end option. These chipsets were designed specifically for the Ryzen 3000+ series CPUs, so they will offer the best performance and features.

3. The Power Design

If you have noticed, the power design is the first thing I review in a motherboard. The reason for that is that the power design directly impacts the stability and performance of your CPU and your system overall.

The power design of a motherboard is the part that delivers power to the CPU and other components of the motherboard. It is really important to get a motherboard with a good power design because if the power delivery is not good, your CPU will not be able to perform at its best. This becomes even more important if you plan to overclock your CPU.

4. The Cooling System

Another important factor to consider when looking for a Ryzen 9 5950X motherboard is the cooling system. The reason for that is that the Ryzen 9 5950X is a very powerful CPU, and it can get quite hot when it is under load.

You won’t be able to know how good the cooling is on a motherboard just by looking at the number of heatsinks or fan headers. You will have to do extra research about this and read reviews online.

5. The Form Factor

The form factor is the physical size of the motherboard. It is important to consider the form factor because it will not only determine which case you can use with your motherboard but also how many expansion slots and drive bays you will have.

There are 3 main form factors for motherboards: ATX, mATX, and mini-ITX. The ATX is the largest form factor, while the mini-ITX is the smallest.

When choosing the form factor, there is no right or wrong answer. It all depends on your needs and preferences. If you want a smaller PC with less expandability, then you should get a mini-ITX motherboard. If you want a large PC with lots of expandability, then you should get an ATX motherboard.

6. Expansion Slots

When I am talking about the expansion slots, I am talking about the PCIe slots. These are the slots that you use to install expansion cards like graphics cards, sound cards, and network cards.

All the X570 and B550 chipsets will have at least 1 PCIe x16 slot. This is the main slot with 16 PCIe lanes that you will use for your graphics card.

If you want to install more than one graphics card, then you should look for a motherboard with multiple PCIe x16 slots. You will also need to make sure that the motherboard supports CrossFire or SLI.

7. Memory Support

Memory support is another important thing to consider when you are looking for a Ryzen 9 5950X motherboard.

The Ryzen 9 5950X supports up to 128GB DDR4-3200MHz RAM. So, you want to make sure that the motherboard you are looking at supports at least that.

But it is not that simple. You should also consider the memory overclocking potential of the motherboard. Some motherboards will be able to overclock the memory to a higher frequency, while others will not.

8. SATA And M.2 support

Next, you want to consider the SATA and M.2 support.

The motherboard you will choose should have at least 2 M.2 slots. These slots are used for M.2 SSDs, which are the fastest storage devices available, and you will use them for your operating system and programs.

When it comes to SATA, you should look for a motherboard with SATA III ports. SATA III is the latest and fastest version of the SATA standard. It has a data transfer rate of 6 Gbps.

9. Networking and Connectivity

When I am talking about networking and connectivity, I am talking about the Ethernet port, the WiFi, the Bluetooth, and the USB ports of a motherboard.

All motherboards come with an Ethernet port. This is the port you will use to connect your PC to the internet using a cable.

WiFi and Bluetooth are not a must, and you will find them only on some high-end motherboards. So, if you don’t need them, then you don’t have to worry about it.

When it comes to USB ports, you should pay attention to not only the number of USB ports but also the type of USB ports.

The latest and fastest version of the USB standard is the USB 3.2 Gen 2×2. So, if you can find a motherboard with USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports, that would be the best choice.

10. Design

This is the less important factor, but it is still something you should consider. The design of the motherboard won’t affect the performance of your PC. But it is still something you should consider because you will have to look at it daily.

You will find many different designs and colors of motherboards. So, you should choose the one that you like the most.
